#3 – Uncovered<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Starsky was so engrossed in the evening newspaper that he didn\u2019t notice Hutch clear his throat. It took a jab to his thigh to grab his attention.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re gonna hurt your eyes trying to read the paper with just the dome light, Starsky. Besides, it\u2019s not the best thing to be lit up like a whorehouse for anyone to see us. This is a stakeout after all.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAlmost done with this article. And are you callin\u2019 my beautiful car a whorehouse?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf the description fits\u2026 What\u2019s this article about, anyway?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTeddy Kennedy proposed this bill today that\u2019d guarantee full health care to all Americans.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThat would cost a boatload of Benjamins, though. Who\u2019s gonna pay for that?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHow do I know? But think about it, Hutch. Me or you gets a serious illness or injury, we wouldn\u2019t go broke, or take years to pay it all back.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWell, it would be better if you did healthful things so you wouldn\u2019t get <\/em>sick, like eat a few vegetables and some fruit every once in a while.\u201d When Starsky opened his mouth to protest, Hutch cut him off with \u201cthe finger-sword of Viking menace,\u201d as Starsky had dubbed it years ago. \u201cAnd the tomato sauce on the pizza or spaghetti isn\u2019t enough.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOkay, okay, I\u2019ll think about it. Anyway, we\u2019re more likely to get hurt. Only way we can stop that is ta give up playing sports, stay outta bar fights, not pet stray dogs or bears or snakes, not date psycho nurses, not be cops no more. Oh, wait, we tried that, but people still tried to kill us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Hutch stiffened in his seat as a frigid breeze blew through him. Inexplicably panicked, he looked at Starsky, who seemed frayed and feathery around the edges, pale, distant, as if drifting away. He rubbed his eyes with his knuckles and when they reopened, everything was back to normal.<\/span><\/p>\n

Starsky put his hand on his friend\u2019s shoulder. \u201cHutch, you okay, babe? You got this kinda weird look on your face for a couple seconds and you went kinda\u2026 frozen. You gettin\u2019 sick?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cUh, no, no, I\u2019m fine. Just a little… indigestion, I guess.\u201d His reply sounded uneasy to his ears.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, gas can be life-threatenin\u2019, ya know. You gotta belch, well, let \u2018er rip. You\u2019re among friends here.\u201d After a quick, reassuring squeeze, Starsky\u2019s hand returned to holding the paper.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hutch laughed softly through his nose. \u201cThat I am.\u201d Quickly, he turned serious. \u201cUh, Starsk, let\u2019s change the subject, okay? Let\u2019s not talk about illness or injury or anything life-threatening. Okay?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Two beats of silence, then Starsky said, \u201cSure thing, Blondie. Oh, did I tell ya I got some more ping-pong balls to replace the broke ones? Figured we could have a rematch tomorrow if things are still quiet.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSure. You do know I\u2019m gonna beat your sorry butt this time, right?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNo way, ya big lummox. I\u2019m more fleet of hand and foot than you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMore like hand-foot-and-mouth disease.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s that? Sounds like an insult, and not a very good one. Don Rickles you ain\u2019t.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLook it up, mushbrain. You wanna make the game interesting?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSure, if there\u2019s a decent bet on it. Whatcha got in mind?\u201d Starsky rubbed his hands together in delightful anticipation of a coming competition.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHow about country-western song titles while we play? Let\u2019s work out the details while we wait for Boyle and Larson to show up.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
