The sky was blue, the sun was bright, and the grass was green and lush. Starsky lay back and looked up at the few puffy white clouds that drifted by. A little way away, Hutch was setting up a portable barbeque. A large, filled picnic cooler sat beside him, brimming with goodies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Starsky felt good. No, better than good, he felt great. Sighing happily, he hoisted himself up to sitting, and rummaged in the cooler for a beer. \u201cHutch,\u201d he said, \u201cThis is the life. A week of vacation. No cares, no worries, beautiful day, good food, good company\u2026 What could be better?\u201d<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cYou could come here and help me set this thing up,\u201d Hutch groused, but his heart wasn\u2019t in the complaint. \u201cAh! There we go.\u201d The final piece snapped in place and the barbeque was complete. He set it down and reached for the bag of charcoal that lay near. He poured the briquettes into the grill, doused them with charcoal lighter, and carefully ignited them. They flared up with a \u201cfwomph\u201d noise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cCome over here, babe,\u201d Starsky called. \u201cThose coals will take awhile to burn down.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hutch reached into the cooler for a beer for himself, and then sat down next to his lover. He moved over and kissed him. Starsky put his beer down and leaned into the kiss.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They made out for awhile, not in a rush, but slowly and comfortably. This was old and familiar territory by now, yet somehow always new and fresh; the press of lips, the swipe of tongue, the pressure of hands moving and touching.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Finally they broke apart to come up for air.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cHow long until we eat?\u201d Starsky asked, taking a long swallow of his beer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cMushbrain,\u201d Hutch laughed, \u201cI have to cook it first. The coals should be ready in a few minutes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cI\u2019m hungry now,\u201d Starsky complained, pouting. \u201cYou got my appetite going, my big, beautiful blond.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hutch laughed again. \u201cThere\u2019s stuff in the cooler. Don\u2019t spoil your appetite.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cNot much chance of that,\u201d Starsky grumbled. \u201cI\u2019m too hungry.\u201d He poked through the cooler. \u201cMmm! Cheese and crackers and pepperoni!\u201d He popped a cube of cheddar in his mouth, followed by a slice of the meat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cSome of the fruit would be healthier,\u201d Hutch lectured, and helped himself to a plum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Starsky dug in the cooler again and came out with a handful. He held it up. \u201cBeulah, peel me a grape!\u201d he commanded in his best Mae West impersonation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hutch ruffled Starsky\u2019s hair. \u201cGoofball,\u201d he said, plucking one of the grapes from the bunch and popping it into Starsky\u2019s mouth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Starsky quickly kissed the invading fingers, then grimaced. \u201cEw, you taste like lighter fluid,\u201d he complained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThat\u2019s what you get,\u201d Hutch admonished. \u201cAnd that reminds me,\u201d he added, \u201cit\u2019s time to start the burgers.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He placed the grill on the barbeque and unwrapped four fat burgers that had been carefully packed in the cooler. Then he laid them out on the grill. They sizzled appetizingly. They smelled even better.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Starsky got up and the two men stood by the barbeque watching the meat brown. Hutch flipped them over, and juice ran from them into the coals below, sending fragrant smoke into the air. They waited, occasionally snacking, as the burgers cooked. Soon they were done.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Starsky pulled buns and cheese from the cooler, and paper plates from a bag, and quickly each man had two perfect cheeseburgers. There were cartons of coleslaw and potato salad in the cooler, and a bottle of ketchup. They had slices of tomato and onion, still crisp.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThe only thing missing,\u201d Starsky said mournfully, \u201cis an order of fries.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cYou tell me how to grill an order of fries,\u201d Hutch said, pointing sternly at him, \u201cand next time we\u2019ll have them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Starsky laughed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For dessert they had a cherry pie, with a can of whipped cream kept cold in the cooler. Finally replete, they both leaned back against each other. The coals burned down to embers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cToo bad we didn\u2019t bring marshmallows,\u201d Starsky mumbled. \u201cWe coulda\u2019 toasted them and made s\u2019mores.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cIf you want them, next time we will,\u201d Hutch said indulgently. They each popped open another beer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Daylight lingered, but eventually a gorgeous sunset spread over the sky. Fireflies, rare in California, but present, started blinking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cHey,\u201d Hutch said. \u201cYou know what today is?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThe first day of our weeks&#8217; vacation,\u201d Starsky said in satisfaction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cOf course, doofus. I meant aside from that. It\u2019s the summer solstice,\u201d Hutch said. \u201cThe longest day of the year.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cOh yeah. I knew that. The first day of summer, too.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThat\u2019s right.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cI know something else about the solstice,\u201d Starsky went on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWhat\u2019s that?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cIt\u2019s supposed to be a magic time,\u201d Starsky said dreamily. \u201cElves and fairies and magic creatures and stuff. That would be nice, Hutch. A little magic.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hutch chuckled. He put his arms around Starsky and nuzzled his neck. \u201cI don\u2019t need any more magic. I already have my magic creature.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cYeah? What\u2019s that?\u201d Starsky leaned into Hutch and nibbled his ear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cI have you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It was a beautiful sunny afternoon.
