Vidder’s Note: This vid is Hutch/Marianne Owens from Ballad for a Blue Lady, Hutch/Kira from Starsky vs Hutch, possibly Hutch/Starsky if you want to see it that way, but most of all Hutch/bad decisions.

Wow. I follow the fanon that 4th season Hutch was due to burn out and conflicting emotions, and you nailed it! Wonderful song and vidding, Garrideb!

    • Garrideb (Monica M) says:

Thank you so much! Yeah, I’m a big fan of the fanon that Hutch was depressed and burned out in season four, and I admit that means that a lot of songs about depression inspire ideas for Hutch vids in my head.

  2. Lisa A says:

Yes, Hutch bad decisions is right! Great video and great song! Well done!!

    • Garrideb (Monica M) says:

Thank you! Hutch and his bad decisions provide a lot of angst for fic and vids, so I admit I’m a fan, even if I want to yell at him to take a look at his life and his choices in a few episodes…

  3. Lapfordlass says:

Bad decisions, Hutch. So bad! You tell a great story in vid, Garideb. Well done!

    • Garrideb (Monica M) says:

Thank you! When I heard this song it instantly clicked in my head with Ballad for a Blue Lady (and to a lesser extent, Starsky vs. Hutch) so this came together pretty easily.

  4. Onnakarot says:

The song, lyrics and Florence’s voice are perfect.
What a beautiful, sad and gorgeous vid. You captured so well the atmosphere of late 4th season and Hutch’s state of mind. And thanks for the -hopeful- ending.

    • Garrideb (Monica M) says:

Ahh, thank you for such a great comment! I’ve long wanted to use a Florence song for a vid, as I’ve been a fan since her first album. And her often-melancholy songs work well for Hutch; I’m glad you feel I captured that season four atmosphere. And I’m glad you found the ending hopeful; that was what I was aiming for!

  5. Lauren says:

    Love the vid!

  6. kat says:

Well done. Really good story-telling of this Hutch who is totally burned out and doesn’t have a clue what he wants. Great song also. I applaud you.

    • Garrideb (Monica M) says:

Thank you! I love burned out, floundering Hutch, and Florence + the Machine’s songs often have a beautiful weariness to them that works well for that. I’m glad you enjoyed it!

  7. silver chipmunk says:

    Excellent!

  8. ChocolateEgg says:

This is an awesome confused/lost Hutch song. Is he asleep or awake? Screaming, kissing strangers, you could be anyone, the heart it hurts. The last line that I think sums it up is ‘Hold me down’. It’s as if he wants to be forced to stop doing what he’s doing – to himself, his partner, his life – and have an excuse to rest – ‘I’m too tired now’ – for a while. Great job!

    • Garrideb (Monica M) says:

Thank you! I love that you shared which lyrics stood out to you. Since I wanted to emphasize Hutch’s exhaustion, I’m glad the “hold me down” conveyed that. I admit, I’m a sucker for confused/lost Hutch, and this song right away reminded me of him. I’m glad you enjoyed!

  9. Mortmere says:

What a beautifully focused video! You really make the most of these muddled relationships Hutch has in S4.

    • Garrideb (Monica M) says:

Thank you, I’m so glad you enjoyed the focus of my vid! One of my favorite things about fandom is how we can fill in plot holes and make sense of inconsistencies through fic, vids, and meta. I’d rather believe Hutch’s bad decisions in season four are part of burnout than just bad writing for the sake of plot.

  10. hardboiledbaby says:

“Take me down, I’m too tired now” and I’m all ‘yesssssssss’! An angsty Hutch vid is my jam, and this is so very hurty-good. Thanks, M!

    • Garrideb (Monica M) says:

Thank you for watching! There are a lot of us Hutch angst fans, which makes me happy, because Hutch angst is my favorite.

  11. Elaine says:

Wow. I am not a fan of much of season 4; depressing and just doesn’t hold my interest the way the first three seasons do. This video reminds me of just how gorgeous DS is, and what an awesome actor; his emotions are so vibrant in this video. Thanks for sharing!

    • Garrideb (Monica M) says:

Oh no, I somehow missed replying to your comment! Thank you so much for watching – I agree with you about season four for the most part, but yeah, DS brings some really poignant acting to the bright spots of the season, sad as they may be.

  12. Maria (MHE) Priest says:

This was marvelous. The song so matched so matched the images. Hutch, I think, is a serial rescuer, which is why he invited Van to stay with him overnight, hooked up with Marianne, inserted himself into Sweet Alice’s life in a way that wasn’t strictly professional (as a cop, not a john!). You picked two great eps to point this out. Well done!
And thanks for introducing me to a great song.

    • Garrideb (Monica M) says:

I agree with you that Hutch is a serial rescuer, which gets him into trouble. (I know you specified that Hutch wasn’t Sweet Alice’s john, but I did once read a fic where Hutch sleeps with her and then spends most of the fic angsting about it, which I quite enjoyed despite being a Starsky/Hutch shipper.) I’m glad you enjoyed my vid exploring Hutch’s issues, and thank you for commenting!

  13. Nancy Roots says:

So awesome. Hutch was burning out and you nailed it in this vid.
Thank you for this gift, Garrideb. KUDOS

    • Garrideb (Monica M) says:

Thank you, Nancy! When I heard the song, it instantly reminded me of Hutch’s burnout, and I had to use it. I’m glad you enjoyed it!

  14. wightfaerie says:

Looking forward to watching this when I have the time. Thank you.

  15. Pat says:

I had to take time to look up the lyrics since I’d never heard the song before so I’m late commenting, Garrideb; sorry about that. Burned out and angry added to bad decisions – that was surely our Hutch late that season. And you found the perfect lyrics! Can’t say it’s one I’ll watch very often but you did a marvelous job of putting it all together seamlessly. Extremely well done!

    • Garrideb (Monica M) says:

Hey, no worries, I am a chronically late commenter myself! I’m really happy you consider my vid seamlessly put-together – that’s really flattering. Thank you for watching and commenting!

  16. Keri says:

This one will stay with me a long time. The grenade, and the burn from the coffee pot at almost the same time, and Hutch’s face. He’s living the lyrics. Take me down… I really loved this, thank you!

    • Garrideb (Monica M) says:

Thank you! It makes me really happy that you feel this vid will stay with you. Burned-out Hutch is a favorite theme of mine, and using the plot elements of Starsky vs. Hutch (the grenade, the coffee pot) to illustrate that was a fun exercise.

  17. Dawn Rice says:

Oh, Hutch. Wonderful vid–that song could have been written about him. He looks so tired.

    • Garrideb (Monica M) says:

Thank you! When I heard that song it strongly reminded me of Hutch’s apparent tiredness in season four, and then I had to vid it. I’m glad you enjoyed it!

  18. Donna says:

Beautiful vid and perfect song choice!

  19. LauraY says:

Beautiful vid with a perfect song for S4 Hutch. Ballad for a Blue Lady isn’t one of my favorites, but visually it contains some very artistic shots that are wonderfully composed. You’ve included many of these in your vid, which enhance the moodiness and artwork-look of the piece. Some favorites are any of the stairwell scenes, Starsky in the hall with his gun drawn, and Hutch through the squadron window with his hair softly lit. Well done!
