“This looks nice,” Starsky said, peering at a photograph of a lake with a few tall pines and low hills in the background. “Not so many trees and mountains.”
Hutch looked over his shoulder and smiled.
The recovery process, after Gunther’s assassination attempt, had been going so well, he had picked up some brochures. Starsky’s doctors and therapists had been enthusiastic about their getting out of town for a few days.
“Sure,” they all said. “Go. Do a little hiking, maybe fishing. See some new country.” They had been in agreement though: “Don’t over do it.”
“That’s a little north of Duluth, Starsk,” Hutch said, his smile growing. “I’d love to take you there.”
“Yeah?” Starsky’s genuine interest was nearly palpable.
“Yeah,” Hutch repeated. “It’s part of the area that gives Minnesota its nickname, Land of Ten Thousand Lakes. The number’s no exaggeration.”
“Says here, though,” Starsky said, reading the brochure, “we’d need to take insect repellant.”
“That’s no exaggeration either,” Hutch admitted.
“Mosquitoes?” Starsky asked, plaintively. “You know I don’t like mosquitoes.”
“Don’t worry, we’ll get a permit,” Hutch replied immediately, straight-faced. “You can shoot them on sight. There’s no season, and no bag limit.”
Starsky stared at him, open-mouthed, until he saw the glint in Hutch’s eyes.
Don’t we all like the glint in Hutch’s eyes?
I thought of adding a few more sentences about the laughter that ensued, but then realized ‘the glint’ shouldn’t be diluted. Thanks for taking the time to write.
This was great. Mosquito license… I could use one of those where I live! Lol. Nice job! 🙂
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed my brief ‘tribute’ to No. MN’s voracious insects. Repellant or no, they very nearly ate me alive when I was there. Wish I’d had a license.
Oh, I know the spot Hutch is talking about! ☺ Hutch would-be smart to bring Starsky to northern MN, it’s beautiful. I loved this story and the memories. And the mosquito permit! ☺
I adore Northern Minnesota but, next time I go, it won’t be in June/July, and I will have a permit. Thanks so much for letting me know this little snippet of a much, much longer story, brought back good memories.
That Hutch, winding Starsky up! heehee
Winding him up so he can soothe and laugh with him afterward. I think they’d both get a kick out of an open-season mosquito permit, don’t you? Thanks for taking the time to comment, Dawn. I really appreciate it.
Aaawww…I just loved this so much!!!
Of course, I love the glint in Hutch’s eyes too!!!
;D
Thank you, bee, I’m really glad you enjoyed it. I think we’re all rather partial to that glint. I very much appreciate your taking the time to tell me.
Thank you for writing this lovely moment they shared after SR. It warms my heart to think of them like this after the shooting, still finding joy in each other.

Thank you, Kat! Short, sweet and glinty. So glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for letting me know.
I can see the look on Starsky’s face when he realizes Hutch’s teasing! 🙂
“You know I don’t like mosquitoes” – Heee heee… So cute! No one likes them, Starsky!
Thank you for this funny little story, Pat! 🙂
Thanks for letting me know you enjoyed it, Sam. And you’re very welcome.
Aww, so sweet. Love that glint in Hutch’s eye. Cute SR snippet. Thank you for sharing with us.
